- NAMI Basics for Professionals | Nami North Texas
NAMI Basics is a free, six-session program designed for parents and other family caregivers of children and adolescents experiencing mental health challenges. NAMI North Texas is now offering this class for professionals to help them better understand the impact that mental health conditions have on the youth as well as the family. The information provided will equip professionals working with youth and their families with unique insights that can enable them to work more collaboratively with families as part of the treatment team, as well as help them understand the value of referring their clients to NAMI Basics. "What is the difference between a “regular” NAMI Basics class and a NAMI Basics for Professionals class provided to professionals?" There is no difference in content. All 6 sessions are taught in their entirety, by trained NAMI Basics teachers. The following modifications are made when the audience is professional caregivers: During the discussion portions of the classes, Basics teachers share what parents tell us when we pose the discussion topics. For example: Discussion question: “How did it feel for you when you finally had a diagnosis for your child’s symptoms?” Basics teacher response: “For me it was a relief. Other parents who have taken this course tell us that it is helpful to finally have a name for what is going on; to know that there actually is something causing the behavior and that it can be treated.” During story sharing, participants are asked to share a story about their experiences with a child that they have worked with and how it impacted them. "Can’t I just take a regular NAMI Basics class with parents?" We never allow anyone into our peer education programs (Basics, Family-to-Family, Peer-to-Peer, or Homefront) who does not have the lived experience. This is to insure a safe, judgment-free environment for participants to be open and honest about their emotional reactions to the challenges of mental health conditions. "Why do we offer a 6 session class to busy professionals?" When NAMI Basics classes are advertised in community, routinely there are requests from teachers, counselors, youth court staff, child protective services staff and other professionals to attend so that they can learn more about the families they are working with. Because these requests are so common, approval was given to pilot the course, as it is written, with professionals in NAMI New York City Metro several years ago. It was such a success that they offer this option several times a year. It has resulted in a better equipped group of professional caregivers, and has also increased the number of families referred by these professionals to the NAMI Basics classes for parents. Questions? - Individuals Living with Mental Illness | Nami North Texas
Individuals Living with Mental Illness Peer-to-Peer Our free, 8-session, confidential Peer-to-Peer program provides educational information that helps adults with mental illness learn more about their condition and treatment options. We aim to provide the most current and up-to-date information about the major mental health conditions, their biological aspects, and information on the possibilities for living in recovery, including various treatment strategies currently available. NAMI will never recommend a specific therapy or approach but instead provides a space for compassionate conversations taught by a trained team of people who have been where you are. Your Peer-to-Peer facilitator will provide specific skills training in problem-solving, listening, communication techniques, handling crises and relapse, guidance on locating appropriate supports and services within the community, and tips on advocating for those supports and services. Groups are structured through presentations, discussions, and interactive exercises that help you learn how to be an active participant in your treatment plan, identify feelings, thoughts, behaviors, and events that could result in a possible relapse, and strengthen interpersonal relationships. Through this process, you will further your knowledge of mental health and gain insight into how to cope with difficult circumstances while sharing your experiences with peers who share the same recovery goal. Class Schedule Connection Recovery Support Group Connection Recovery Support Group is a free, 90-minute support group for adults living with a mental health condition. Meeting once a month, connection recovery aims to combat the isolation and anxiety accompanying mental illness. These groups strive to create respectful, compassionate, and understanding environments that lead to meaningful conversations, where members share their struggles and successes. Members can find support and empathetic discussions that offer insight into others’ coping strategies, problems, concerns, and paths to recovery. Connection Recovery is entirely confidential, and you never have to share more than you want to. NAMI does not recommend or endorse any medications or other medical therapies during the groups and instead offers a casual, relaxed, and flexible approach without an educational format. Our facilitators have been where you are- each group is led by individuals going through recovery. They understand your struggles and offer support, encouragement, and connection without judgment. Everyone is a valued participant, and we welcome you to join and share. Group Schedule "Mary and Hannah did an incredible job leading the class! They were so kind and welcoming each week. As leaders they created a supportive classroom environment that made me feel safe and encouraged. I would highly recommend this class to others. I now have the courage to use goal tracking as I pursue my dreams. The goal exercises in class helped me to better form this positive habit."
- NAMI On Campus | Nami North Texas
NAMI On Campus College is an exciting time. From being away from home and finding independence to meeting new people and trying new things, every day brings new experiences. There is also a new level of academic responsibility. Classes are harder and there is always a due date on the horizon. Balancing all of the changes that happen in college can be stressful and challenging. Those challenges are even more difficult for the 1 in 5 students who also face a mental health condition. Nearly three-quarters of mental health conditions emerge by age 24, so many college students are facing mental health concerns for the first time, and may not know where to go for support. NAMI knows that some of the best support a student can receive is from peers. When students connect with one another, they can share common experiences and support each other through the transitions. NAMI on Campus helps make those connections happen. NAMI on Campus clubs work to end the stigma that makes it hard for students to talk about mental health and get the help they need. Clubs hold creative meetings, innovative awareness events, and offer signature NAMI programs through partnership with NAMI North Texas. Contact us and let's talk about bringing NAMI to your campus. For additional information and support, please see NAMI's C ollege Guide .
